Double R Racing has announced it will field a three-car entry in the refreshed FIA Formula 3 European Championship this year with already-confirmed pairing Antonio Giovinazzi and Sean Gelael to be joined by female Colombian racer Tatiana Calderón.
The Woking-based team is to switch to full-time European action for the first time in its history this year with a trio of Mercedes-powered Dallaras. Italian 19-year-old Giovinazzi, the 2012 Formula Pilota China Champion, and 16-year-old Indonesian racer Gelael both signed to race with Double R prior to Christmas.
South American 19-year-old Calderón, the first woman to finish on the podium in the US-based Star Mazda Championship, now completes Double R’s line-up for the FIA F3 European Championship and arrives at the team off the back of a strong year in the European F3 Open, where she was ninth overall, and a promising run in the recently concluded New Zealand-based Toyota Racing Series.
Prior to this, Tatiana was a double podium finisher in her second season of Star Mazda in 2011 and ended the championship sixth overall while also contesting selected Euro F3 Open events. During her karting career, the Bogota-born driver won the Stars of Karting National ICA Junior and IAME International Challenge titles.
“We’re delighted Antonio, Sean and Tatiana are making the step into European competition with Double R”, said team principal Anthony ‘Boyo’ Hieatt, “We have raced on the Hankook tyres before, so we know what to expect where they’re concerned.
“Although there are some highly experienced drivers in European F3 this year our three are very promising and could well spring some surprises. Testing so far has gone well, we’ve had some good running at Pembrey, so now we can’t wait for the season to get underway.”
Gelael, who is part of the Sean GP Management stable along with Giovinazzi, made a big arrival in single-seater racing last year with an impressive campaign in Formula Pilota. Finishing his debut season fourth in the standings with one victory, the Jakarta teenager was also runner-up in the ‘Best Asian Driver Trophy’ class. He also entered three races in the Formula Abarth Championship.
Dominant 2012 Formula Pilota China Champion Giovinazzi will head into the FIA F3 European season as one to watch having claimed several wins and countless podiums last year, with two subsequent victories in the Formula Abarth finale on home ground in Monza, Italy.
Monza will host the opening event of the 2013 FIA Formula 3 European Championship on 23rd/24th March with the season reaching its conclusion on 26th/27th October at Paul Ricard in France. British rounds will take place in April and May at Silverstone and Brands Hatch respectively.
